Cadence and Datang Help Communications Industry Speed Time to Market With First Joint Wireless Product

Fusion of Next-Generation TD-SCDMA Mobile Technology with Digital Signal Processing Tool Reduces Development Time

SAN JOSE, Calif. and BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 19, 2002-- Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NYSE:CDN - News) and Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co. Ltd., Beijing, today announced a collaborative effort to develop standards-based solutions that can help 3G developers in China and the rest of the world accelerate time to market for mobile communications products. The first solution resulting from this collaboration - a base-band library - fuses Datang's uplink and downlink simulation models with the Cadence® Signal Processing Worksystem (SPW), extending the next-generation TD-SCDMA standard to the worldwide audience.

"China currently is one of the largest subscriber bases for the TD-SCDMA 3G wireless standard," said Yang Guiliang, general manager, New Technology Department, Datang Mobile Communications. "By extending the standard's reach globally, through the integration of our simulation chains with the Cadence SPW platform, among others, we intend to help many additional users speed R&D development and reduce time to market. We expect the integration will result in widespread adoption of the TD-SCDMA standard."

"Modern 3G designs are some of the largest and most complex that will be enabled by next-generation nanometer technology," said Liu Yan, general manager of Cadence China. "Datang's simulation models are the foundation of its TD-SCDMA system simulation and, at this level of complexity, leveraging premier design tools such as SPW is absolutely critical for algorithm development and first pass success. Our collaboration demonstrates the commitment of Cadence and Datang to promote the benefits of TD-SCDMA to our many mutual customers and to the communications industry at large. It further exemplifies Cadence support of open standards."

The SPW system-design product uses a hierarchical block diagram approach to accelerate the design and development of complex, algorithm-intensive digital signal processing (DSP) systems. Part of the Cadence wireless solution flow, SPW is the only electronic design automation (EDA) solution for signal processing that provides a fully integrated, streamlined solution from algorithm design to implementation on multi-ASIC/FPGA systems and systems-on-a-chip (SoCs), including next-generation nanometer designs. It captures and verifies the operation of DSP applications at baseband, and generates register transfer level (RTL) code in VHDL or Verilog, targeting the Cadence BuildGates product for data path synthesis. In addition, SPW supports Cadence NC-Sim for mixed-language logic verification, SpectreRF for radio frequency design, and AMS Designer for analog and mixed-signal design; Xilinx CORE Generator and FPGA layout suite; Synplicity Synplify Pro advanced FPGA synthesis solution; and DSP cores for firmware verification. The Datang TD-SCDMA User Equipment R&D center is recommending the SPW-based TD-SCDMA library models Datang has been developing, and will leverage the Cadence tool chain with SPW, NC-Sim and other design and verification products to develop a TD-SCDMA platform prototype this year. Datang and Cadence are working together to accelerate the adoption of the standard throughout the world market.

About TD-SCDMA

TD-SCDMA is a mainstream 3G standard. With the introduction of such new technologies as Smart Antenna, uplink synchronization, and beacon handover, TD-SCDMA offers compelling features in high spectrum utilization, low equipment cost and asymmetric data services, compared with other 3G standards.

About Datang

Datang Mobile Communication Equipment Co. Ltd. is a subsidiary of CATT (China Academy for Telecommunications Technology), which proposed TD-SCDMA on behalf of China. CATT, well known for its more than 40 years of telecom manufacturing experience, is the strongest R&D power in China. In its aim to fulfill TD-SCDMA commercialization, CATT consolidated its internal mobile resources and strengths, and set up Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co. Holding patents for the TD-SCDMA mobile technology standard, Datang Mobile focuses its main business on the production and licensing of TD-SCDMA technology mobile equipment. The services and products will be delivered to the market by the end of 2003.
